Berlin Car Crash: One Dead And 30 Injured As Vehicle Smashes Into Crowd

BREAKING: According to several European media sources a car drove into a crowd of people Wednesday morning with at least 30 injured and one dead in Berlin, Germany.

The vehicle crashed outside a department store in Rankestrasse in the Charlottenburg area.

No further information about the driver was immediately available.

One image said to be from the scene shows piles of chairs and tables destroyed in the crash.

German police have confirmed the suspect, who is a male, is now in custody.

It’s still unclear whether the crash was an intentional act or a traffic accident.

“A man is believed to have driven into a group of people. It is not yet known whether it was an accident or a deliberate act,” police said, adding that he was being held at the scene.

“We arrested the driver and are clarifying the matter.”

The incident took place near the scene of a fatal attack in 2016 when Anis Amri, a failed Tunisian asylum seeker with Islamist links, hijacked a truck, killed the driver and then plowed it into a crowded western Berlin Christmas market, killing 11 more people and injuring dozens of others.
