Attorney Bobbi Sternheim said in the letter Maxwell was abruptly removed from the general population, sent to solitary confinement, and placed on suicide watch Friday without a psychological evaluation and “without justification.”
“I met with Ms. Maxwell today…” Sternheim said in the letter. “She is not suicidal.”
“If Ms. Maxwell remains on suicide watch, is prohibited from reviewing legal materials prior to sentencing, becomes sleep-deprived, and is denied sufficient time to meet with and confer with counsel, we will be formally moving on Monday for an adjournment,” Attorney Bobby Sternheim wrote in a letter to U.S. Circuit Judge Alison Nathan.
Maxwell’s attorney wrote in the letter that she hasn’t been able to “properly prepare” because officials at a Brooklyn federal prison abruptly put her in solitary confinement and informed her she was on suicide watch Friday, the letter said, according to Reuters.
Maxwell, who has been accused of helping Epstein set up a scheme to lure young girls into sexual relationships, was put on suicide watch even though she “is not suicidal,” according to her attorney. A psychologist evaluated Maxwell and backed up that assessment, according to Reuters.
The controversy and concern for Maxwell being placed on “suicide watch” come after Jeffrey Epstein, Maxwell’s one-time boyfriend, killed himself in a Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 awaiting his trial on sex trafficking charges.
Conspiracy theorists believe Epstein did not kill himself in prison but was rather murdered and fear the same strategy will be applied to Ghislaine Maxwell before her sentencing in order to prevent the 61-year-old from ever releasing the names of her clients.
Earlier in December, a decision was taken between the defense and prosecution that Jeffrey Epstein’s famous little black book of contacts and Epstein Island visitors wouldn’t be released to the public, The Independent reported.
Maxwell was convicted last year on charges she had groomed girls for Epstein between 1994 and 2004 that he abused. She and her attorneys have complained about the conditions of her incarceration since she was first arrested, with complaints she was subjected to strip searches and awakened every 15 minutes.
