Yoni Barrios, 32, has been identified as the mass stabbing suspect who killed two people and injured six others during a stabbing rampage on the Las Vegas Strip on Friday.
Barrios is a Guatemalan national in the U.S. illegally with a criminal record in California, a source with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said.
Barrios allegedly stabbed eight people — a mix of tourists and residents — just after 11:40 a.m. local time on the sidewalk near the Wynn Las Vegas hotel, police said. Two people — Las Vegas residents Brent Allan Hallett, 47, and Maris Mareen DiGiovanni, 30 — died, officials said. The other victims remain hospitalized.
The Guatemalan illegal began his rampage after a group of showgirls refused to take a picture with him. He approached the group of women and said he was a chef, local news station KTNV reported. He used what authorities described as a “large knife with a long blade,” and began attacking when they rebuffed him, according to Fox News.
Sands security quickly arrived to detain Barrios along with Metropolitan Police officers. There were no other suspects involved in the stabbing spree.
Barrios will be charged with two counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder when he appears in court next week, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said Friday.
Critics on social media were quick to suggest that “Latin American governments are taking advantage of the Biden border crisis by emptying their prisons and sending criminals here.” Christina Pushaw, Rapid Response Director for Governor Ron DeSantis claimed she heard of such rumors “specifically from Venezuelans who live in Florida; they say Maduro is rumored to be doing this.”
Many agreed with Pushaw’s statement backing up such claims that the tactic is “right out of the Castro Playbook.
Yes—it’s right out of the Castro (Mariel Boatlift) playbook. The oligarchs of Latin America are also outsourcing their poverty by sending uneducated peasants to the US. Meanwhile, talented engineers from Europe can’t immigrate here legally.
