Former Riverdale extra Ryan Grantham was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his mother and plotting to kill Canadian PM, Justin Trudeau.
Per the Independent, the British Columbia Supreme Court sentenced Grantham on Sept. 21 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the first 14 years of his sentence. Grantham, who also had a role in The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, pled guilty to second-degree murder in March this year. Grantham shot his 64-year-old mother, Barbara Anne Waite, in the back of the head while she was playing piano in March 2020, a murder he rehearsed and filmed with a G-Pro.
“I shot her in the back of the head,” Grantham reportedly admitted on video. “In the moments after, she would have known it was me.”
Grantham reportedly wanted to shield his mother from witnessing the acts of violence he planned to commit after, according to prosecutors. Her body was soon found by Grantham’s sister, Lisa.
The day after the killing, the actor reportedly packed his truck up with Molotov cocktails, guns, and ammunition and drove east with the intention of killing Trudeau in Ottawa.
Grantham then turned around after thinking about committing a mass shooting at Simon Fraser University, where he was enrolled. He eventually turned himself into the Vancouver Police Department that night.
According to Fox News, the young actor had reportedly experienced feelings of depression and self-hatred, which prosecutors believe were exacerbated by isolation, smoking an excessive amount of cannabis, and watching gory videos on the Internet.
In a journal entry written the day of the killing, Grantham reportedly apologized to his family and said “no one” would understand him.
“I’m so sorry mom, I’m so sorry Lisa… I hate myself,” he wrote, according to prosecutors. “There’s a lot of media of me out there… film and TV… hundreds of hours of me that can be viewed and dissected… No one will understand.”
Justice Kathleen Ker noted that Grantham was receiving counseling in prison and appeared to be improving, according to the CBC.
As for Grantham’s motive, Crown prosecutor Michaela Donnelly alleged the actor was worried his mother would find out about his marijuana use and poor academic performance. Other reports claimed Grantham killed his mother so she would not witness the aftermath of the actor’s plans to kill Trudeau.
According to CBR.com, Lisa Grantham, the actor’s sister, discovered her mother’s body the day after her murder after several calls and text messages went unanswered. “It breaks my heart she struggled so hard … only to be murdered by her own son… She was vulnerable and Ryan gave her no chance to defend herself. It pains me to know he was a danger to her life,” Grantham said in a court statement.
