BREAKING: California Republican John Duarte Flips Seat After 48 Years Of Being Dem-Led

Published on

The Associated Press projects that Republican John Duarte will win the House race in California’s 13th Congressional District, defeating Democrat challenger Adam Gray.

There were no incumbents in the race for the district, after current Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., ran for re-election in California’s 12th Congressional District.

Gray, who served in the state assembly before making his bid for congress, was endorsed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., in his race.

The district has not elected a Republican since 1974 and Democratic voters outnumber Republicans 42 percent to 24 percent with more than 21 percent identifying with no party preference.

Despite the political party makeup, the race was considered to be one of the more competitive in the country this year and Duarte’s win is one of several seats that were key to Republicans gaining control of the House.

Duarte, who runs a family-owned nursery in a largely agricultural area of the state, became known in conservative circles for taking on the federal government over water regulations.
