Chinese State Media Suggests Nancy Pelosi Be ‘Restrained,’ Punished’ By CCP For Taiwan Trip

Published on

It appears the Speaker of The House, Nancy Pelosi, has seriously triggered the former chief editor of the Chinese Communist Party’s state tabloid, the Global Times over her plans to visit Taiwan.

China’s government warned Tuesday it would take “forceful measures” if Pelosi visited Taiwan after the Financial Times reported she would travel to the Chinese-claimed territory next month.

Pelosi plans to also visit Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore while on her Asia trip, the London paper added.

Hu Xijin, the former Global Times chief editor, suggested an aggressive and militaristic response to the speaker’s plan to visit the island country, saying that a war aircraft should enter Taiwan in retaliation.

“My suggestion to Chinese [government and] military: If Pelosi visits Taiwan, PLA military aircraft will accompany Pelosi’s plane to enter the island, making a historic crossing of the island by military aircraft from mainland for the 1st time,” Hu wrote on Twitter. “Its significance would overwhelm Pelosi’s visit.”

While Hu Xinjin has taken it upon himself to declare war on the United States, he also seems to have forgotten that America isn’t a communist country, suggesting that Biden has the power to tell Nancy Pelosi what to do.

“Biden is supposed to have the ability to prevent the reckless visit of Pelosi, rather than ‘I don’t know what the status of it is.’ If the US can’t restrain her, let China restrain her & punish her. PLA Air Force will surely make her visit a disgrace to herself and to the US,” the former chief editor wrote.

According to Fox News, Hu, who retired from the Global Times last year, has continued to write and speak for the CCP online and at national events. The former editor rose to prominence with aggressive, mocking, and intentionally provocative comments on social media.

Twitter users and critics familiar with Xijin responded to the request suggesting that Hu Xijin has no idea how things work in the United States and questioning why Xijin thinks Biden can control the lives and movement of other people.

Sean Su wrote, “I’m convinced now that Hu Xijin really thinks the USA is just another variant of authoritarianism he has at home in China, otherwise why does he think Biden controls the lives and movements of other people?”

Despite Taiwan declaring itself independent of the People’s Republic of China as well as claiming continuation of governance from pre-revolutionary China, The Chinese Communist Party has argued those claims, themselves claiming sovereignty over Taiwan and the Taiwan Strait, the relatively narrow strip of ocean between the island of Taiwan and the Chinese mainland.

The Chinese military has frequently sent planes into the area, testing Taiwan’s air defense zone, as well as sending a strong message that they are keeping tabs on the self-proclaimed independent territory. Critics also suggest that China’s air visits to the island are an attempt to remind Taiwan who’s boss.

The ant-Pelosi rhetoric does lead one to question whether the suggested attack on the Speaker of The House is in fact coming directly from Xijin, or is this a subliminal message from the People’s Republic of China themselves?

It wouldn’t be completely out of character for China to provoke or instigate such rhetoric seeing that China has warned the United States several times in the past to stay out of their affairs with Taiwan or face “consequences”.

On Tuesday the Wall Street Journal reported, “China warned that a Taiwan visit by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would deeply damage relations with the U.S., in what would be one of the highest-level U.S. trips to the island in years amid rancor between Washington and Beijing.”

Will Pelosi cancel her trip to Taiwan out of fear that China will actually take up Hu Xijin on his request? Most likely not, but it may deter her from entering the island in fear it may further spark US/China tensions.
