Murphy: Gun-Reform “Closer Than Ever Before”, But Won’t Include Assault Weapons Ban

As America waits to learn its fate of 2A, members of Congress are busy up on Capitol Hill trying to work out a deal that not only keeps the country safe but also protects its second amendment right.

Let’s not kid ourselves though, if it was up to the far-left, they’d be coming for our guns tomorrow. Fortunately for those of us who take our freedoms seriously, there’s this little thing called the “filibuster” that’s preventing that very situation from becoming a reality. House Democrats tried to push through stricter gun laws just last week, but failed in the Senate with 47-47 votes, short of the 60 needed to open debate.

So back to the drawing board our elected officials went to see if they could come up with legislation that fell more in line with the constitution, and according to Senator Chris Murphy, we may be “closer than ever before” to coming up with a gun-reform package that does not include an assault weapons ban or comprehensive background checks.

According to the NY Post, the Connecticut Democrat, who has been involved in the negotiations with his colleagues across the aisle, said he hasn’t seen gun talks as “serious” as those currently in progress since the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School 10 years ago.

He said Democrats and Republicans have agreed to take some “commonsense steps” while still upholding Americans’ Second Amendment rights — but he warned, “we’re not going to do everything I want.”

“We’re not going to put a piece of legislation on the table that’s going to ban assault weapons, or we’re not going to pass comprehensive background checks,” the senator said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Republicans have been adamant that gun reform should focus less on the gun itself and more on the mental illnesses of those who use them in mass shootings which is why I was pleasantly surprised to learn that, according to Senator Murphy, the measures will likely include investments in mental health, funds to increase school security and a change in red flag laws. He said talks are continuing and the senators are “trying to figure out what can get 60 to 70 votes in the Senate.”

“We’re talking about a meaningful change in our gun laws, a major investment in mental health, perhaps some money for school security, that would make a difference,” Murphy said.

I can’t imagine what Joe Biden is thinking now that his party is forced to take what they can get if they want to see a deal get done, despite Murphy spinning this as a win and a step in the right direction. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a step in the right direction alright, just not for the Democrats.

Just this past week, the President called for a ban on assault rifles and even came dangerously close to going after handguns that include high-caliber bullets. To the far-left radicals, this is far from a “liberal win” that is sure to send the likes of AOC, Senator Warren, and other high-profile progressives into a meltdown.

I do agree with House Minority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise, however, who said lawmakers should be “focusing on the root cause of the problems” and not attacking the Second Amendment.

“You had members, Democrats, cursing out the Second Amendment. You had members saying, well, if we can’t get this, we’re going to blow up the filibuster and pack the Supreme Court to get around the Second Amendment,” the Louisiana Republican said on “Fox News Sunday.”

“The Second Amendment is not some guideline, it’s part of the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and it’s there for a reason, by the way. Every day in America people use guns to defend themselves,” he said.

Amen to that, and I’m glad the Democrats, including Murphy himself, are finally starting to come around and consider the constitution while making these decisions. We must be able to defend ourselves at all costs, and it’s not up to Joe Biden or any elected official to take that right away.
