Newsom’s Capital City Sacramento Reaches Homeless Population All-Time Record High

Published on

The homeless toll has reached an all-time high in California’s capital city of Sacramento as an estimated 9,278 people are now living without proper shelter, according to the 2022 Homeless Point-In-Time Count, a 67% spike since 2019.

Democrat disaster Gavin Newsom recently introduced a plan to house the homeless across the state, but the move may be too little too late, as the plan only covers a fraction of what is actually needed to curb homelessness.

According to the 2022 Homeless Point-In-Time Count conducted by Sacramento State University, there are currently an estimated 9,278 people living without proper shelter in the city.

Pro-Newsome advocates, who continue to run defense for the failed Governor, continue to blame Covid-19 for “exacerbating the crisis”, however, the homeless themselves would disagree, as they admit most of them became homeless prior to the pandemic, a group of volunteers who canvas shelters and record data reported.

The group found that 72 percent of homeless people were found outdoors in tents, vehicles, abandoned buildings, and other uninhabitable structures. The figures for tents and vehicles were five times higher than in 2019.

In February, Newsom announced $45 million for new “Homekey” projects in Sacramento and Los Angeles, which includes the purchase of a hotel to transform into a shelter, but critics claim the $45 million is a drop in the bucket compared to what is actually needed seeing that since Prop HHH was passed in 2016 authorizing $1.2 billion for shelter, and despite the billion-dollar-plus allocation, the number of homeless has still managed to increase.

Sacramento and Los Angeles continue to be among the cities in California worst hit by the homelessness crisis, and though money is being poured into fixing the problem, very little is changing.
