BREAKING: Democrats Keep Control Of Senate, Laxalt Loses Key Nevada Race To Cortez Masto

Published on

Democrats are projected to hold onto their narrow Senate majority after Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto eked out a win in Nevada Saturday night, according to The Hill.

The battle for the House, meanwhile, remains too close to call.

The picture in the Senate became clear on Saturday after Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada narrowly defeated Republican Adam Laxalt to win re-election, putting her party over the threshold, NBC News projected Saturday.

The state of the economy and abortion dominated the conversation in races up and down the ballot in Nevada, where working-class and Latinx voters are critical voting blocs key to any statewide candidate’s chances of success. The 2022 elections were a key test of whether the so-called Reid Machine can continue to reliably propel Democrats in the state to victory up and down the ballot, according to 19thNews.org.

The state’s economy, heavily reliant on the tourism and hospitality industries, was hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, with inflation, higher gas prices, and rising costs of living looming particularly large in the Nevada Senate race.

Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona won his re-election contest in Arizona, NBC News projected Friday evening, directing all eyes to Nevada and its two most populous counties, Clark and Washoe, as mail-in ballot counting continued over the weekend.
