Apparently, U.S. Democrat lawmakers didn’t get the memo from China that they’re not welcome in Taiwan, despite China’s several warnings prior to and following Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit just one week ago.
A group of five U.S. representatives landed in Taiwan on Sunday in another high-level undercover visit just days after Pelosi infuriated China with a trip to the self-proclaimed island. Why Pelosi decided to randomly visit the island is still unclear.
According to Fox News, Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., is leading the unannounced delegation. The group will meet with Taiwanese officials throughout Sunday. China has condemned such visits in the past and continues to voice its anger with the United States over Pelosi’s recent visit, but has yet to release a statement regarding Markey’s group.
Other members of the delegation include Democratic Reps. John Garamendi of California, Alan Lowenthal of California, Don Beyer of Virginia, and Republican Rep. Amata Radewagen of American Samoa.
The Ministry Of Foreign Affairs posted pictures of Vice Minister Yui with the delegation upon arrival as well as throughout the trip which will most certainly cause China to lash out at both the United States and Taiwan.
“Vice Minister Yui extended the warmest of welcomes to #Taiwan’s longstanding friend @SenMarkey & his cross-party delegation comprising @RepGaramendi, @RepLowenthal, @RepDonBeyer & @RepAmata. We thank the like-minded #US lawmakers for the timely visit & unwavering support,” the post read.
The Chinese Communist Party continues to argue the top-level visits violate the U.S. “One China” policy, which states that the U.S. acknowledges the People’s Republic of China as the one and only government of China.
A group similar to Markey’s delegation also made a surprise landing in Taiwan in April, including Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Ben Sasse of Nebraska.
It is unclear why Pelosi and the Democrat representatives continue to visit Taiwan or what congressional business exactly they are conducting while there.
