The police Unions in Chicago have been fighting Mayor Lori Lightfoot on the vaccine mandate since she announced that all city workers would have to be vaccinated by the October 15th deadline.

John Catanzara, president of the local Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) vowed to sue Lightfoot and the City of Chicago as he didn’t think she had the authority or power to mandate the Covid-19 vaccine for city workers. As the deadline loomed, 50% of the Chicago Police Department had yet to get vaccinated or submit to regular testing.

John Catanzara kept his word and took the City of Chicago to court where Judge Raymond Mitchell ruled on Monday to suspend Chicago’s Covid-19 vaccine policy that required all police officers to get vaccinated by the year’s end in what’s being described as a “major victory” for police unions.

While the Mitchell ruling doesn’t affect other city workers subject to the mandate, the deadline for police is on hold until complaints can be settled in arbitration.

Although the vaccine mandate is on hold, police officers will need to test regularly for Covid-19 and submit their vaccination status by the Dec. 31 deadline.

Lori Lightfoot, however, has vowed to keep pushing the vaccine mandate and will review with her legal team the restraining order that Judge Mitchell has recently imposed on the City Of Chicago.

“Our lawyers are looking at the judge’s ruling and looking at what our legal options are,” she said. “But what I know is we cannot stop, we absolutely cannot stop. This is about saving people’s lives.”
