Biden Finally Speaks With DeSantis About Hurricane Ian After Nationwide Blowback

Published on

In yet another act of division and complete unprofessionalism, President Biden waited until the 11th hour to contact Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) about Hurricane Ian.

Out of respect for the chain of command, DeSantis should have been the first person the President called to coordinate efforts between the White House and Florida. Biden, however, instead spoke with 3 Democrat Mayors, Mayor Jane Castor of Tampa, Mayor Ken Welch of St. Petersburg, and Mayor Frank Hibbard of Clearwater completely overstepping DeSantis.

Tensions between Joe Biden and Ron DeSantis have grown in recent weeks over the transportation of illegal migrants that Governor DeSantis sent to Martha’s Vineyard. The White House claims the Florida Governor used migrants as part of a political stunt despite DeSantis making it clear he was only sending illegals to a ‘Sanctuary Town’ he thought they would be able to find great opportunities in.

In a recent White House press conference, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reassured members of the press that “politics” would not get in the way of both the President and the Governor working closely together on Hurricane Ian, yet Biden refused at first to call DeSantis until Tuesday evening.

“President Biden spoke this evening with Governor DeSantis of Florida to discuss the steps the Federal government is taking to help Florida prepare for Hurricane Ian,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Twitter, adding the two “committed to continued close coordination.”

The courtesy call to DeSantis was too little too late, and the White House has since been on the receiving end of immense criticism from both Republicans and the Press who called the President out for putting politics ahead of the people of Florida.

Residents of Florida’s Gulf Coast on Tuesday boarded up their homes, packed up their vehicles, and headed for higher ground as Hurricane Ian drew near, threatening to bring a deadly storm surge and more than a foot (30 cm) of rain to some areas.
